The biggest difference is that the Nissan Leaf can go 100 miles on pure electric power while the Volt can only go 40. BUT the Volt also has a gasoline-powered generator, so that after its 40 mile electric range runs out it can go another 300 miles using that.
The Volt has a slightly faster top speed and uses a 16 kWh Li-ion battery as opposed to the Leaf’s 24 kWh battery. The Volt is also more expensive at $41,000 starting price compared to the Leaf’s $32,780 (these are the prices without tax credits).
