One main difference is the tires. Mountain bikes have much thicker tires with more traction for rough mountain roads. Road bikes have very thin, smooth tires for speed.
Mountain bikes are designed for durability and road bikes are designed for speed. Mountain bikes tend to be heavier, with wide gripping tires. They have suspension and wider handle bars. Road bikes tend to reduce as much excess weight as possible; they have thin tires, a light frame, no suspension, and position the rider higher on the bike.
