Marine life lives in the oceans, seas, and bays, which are salt water. Riverine animals live in rivers which are fresh water–no salt. Some animals can only survive in one or the other; some animals, such as salmon, live in both during different parts of their life cycle. Then there are animals like otters, where there are both Sea Otters and River Otters.
The main difference would be the difference in waters. Rivers contain freshwater while oceans contain saltwater. Also, oceans tend to be large and deep where rivers are to a much lesser extent. Since oceans are much larger than rivers, they are a habitat to much larger animals like whales.
“Marine” means ocean or sea. Marine life does not live in rivers.
