What is the difference between a lander and an orbiter?

As its name implies, the lander lands upon the surface of a planet or moon to allow for closer study. Landers may carry rovers as well, such as the Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity. Orbiters, on the other hand, circle the planet or moon so we can study the surface from a distance.
