What is the difference between a lagoon and a gulf?

A lagoon is a shallow pool or bay that is separated from other waters by a sand bar or other physical barrier. Gulfs on the other hand are bays that have direct attachment to the ocean. Many lagoons are often mistaken for bays and some even contain the name bay, such as New York’s Great Sound Bay.
