In the central and western Pacific, the sea surface temperature goes over 80 degrees F (this is called the “warm pool”). During El Niño, the “warm pool expands to cover the tropics…but during La Niña, the easterly trade winds strengthen and cold upwelling along the equator and the West coast of South America intensifies.” During La Niña, the surface of the sea drops 7 degrees F.
