What is the difference between a gulf and a bay?

A gulf is loosely defined as a part of a sea or ocean partly enclosed by land. The difference between a gulf and a bay though is that a gulf is considerably larger.

Both are pretty much the same definition wise, but a bay is usually referred to a body of water that is smaller than a gulf. And smaller than a bay is a cove. There are some exceptions to this generic rule of thumb, such as the Bay of Bengal, which is actually bigger than the Gulf of Mexico.
