What is the difference between a fruit and a nut?

Nuts are actually a type of fruit. A fruit is the mature ovary of a flower, and the seed is the embryonic plant that is found within the fruit. Therefore, the nutshell is the ‘fruit’ and the nut is the seed of the plant.

Also, many of the things that we think of as nuts may not be considered nuts scientifically. For example, a peanut is actually a legume. Almonds and coconuts are fruits, however; they are called drupes.
