What is the difference between a crow and a raven?

Technically the group “crows” does include ravens. But it’s very important to realize that ravens are a distinct species from common crows, and stand out in that group. Ravens are among the most intelligent birds in the world — brainy even among the generally-intelligent crows. Physically, they are much larger than crows, with a heavier bill and shaggy neck plumage. Ravens are well-known for their problem-solving skills, and their complex relationship with wolves in the wild. For an excellent exploration of what makes ravens special, check out Bernd Heinrich’s book “The Mind of the Raven”.
