What is the difference between a cave and a cavern?

According to the dictionary, there is no difference between a cave and a cavern. They are both underground voids that are large enough for a human to enter. However, some claim that caverns are different in that they are not naturally formed, as caves are, but are chemically formed from calcite and other processes like acid rain.
