    Bluegill and sunfish are different species. They look similar except for color. Bluegill typically have dark, vertical bars and a blue spot on the gill cover. Sunfish are more colorful and usually have a blue and red spot on the gill cover. There are many species of sunfish with different colorations, like Pumpkinseeds, Green Sunfish and Orange Spotted Sunfish.

    They belong to the same fish family, Lepomis.
