What is the difference between a barge and a boat?

Barges are flat bottomed boats used mainly for the transport of people and goods in rivers and canals.

In other words all barges are boats but not all boats are barges.

The most significant difference between the two is size. A barge is essentially a type of boat but is much bigger. It is used to transport large/bulky things. And it goes much slower than a regular boat. Sometimes it is used for functions or parties.
