What is the difference between apes and gorillas?

Here’s a quick taxonomic breakdown of gorillas to compliment jharte‘s answer.

Order: Primates (lemurs, lorisids, galagos, tarsiers, monkeys, and apes)
    Superfamily: Hominoidea (the apes)
Family: Hominidae (“great apes”; humans, chimps, gorillas, orangutans)
    Genus: Gorilla

There are two currently recognized species (though this is debated): Gorilla gorilla, the western gorilla; and Gorilla beringei, the eastern gorilla. There are some four (possibly five) subspecies within these.

Check out the sidebar on the Wikipedia page for a similar breakdown rife with hyperlinks to the various groups in the gorilla’s taxonomic breakdown.
