A food allergy is an immune system reaction after eating a certain food, whereas a food intolerance is a digestive system response to a certain food. Food allergies develop when your body (mistakenly) thinks a protein in a food is harmful and creates disease-fighting antibodies that it releases on subsequent instances of you eating the food, which causes a bodily reaction. Food intolerances are much more common and less serious, and often occur when someone lacks the proper enzymes to digest a certain type of food.
