What is the difference between a 100 year flood and a 500 year flood?

    an X year flood is a way of talking about the intensity of a flood and its statistical chance of occurring. A 100 year flood is a flood intensity that has a 1% chance of occurring in any given year. A 500 year flood is likewise a flood that has a 0.2% chance of happening any given year.
