Toyota has denied that the electronics in its cars are to blame for the acceleration problems, but recently a team of electrical engineers voiced their disagreement. They argue that electronics can go wrong in many ways.
The problem may not be Toyota cars themselves; runaway cars have been a problem for years. It may be instead a problem with weaknesses in the fundamental design of the engine control module, which links the throttle motor with the gas pedal sensors. One engineer argued that while EMC design engineers acknowledge the fault, car makers do not.
It seems that the debate over what caused the accelerations is still going, but hopefully we’ll have a definitive answer soon.
