What determines if a storm is going to rain or not?

Each rain storm is unique. At times clouds spend an entire day forming before any precipitation, while at other times the weather can abruptly change from sunny to storm and rain. When turbulence within a cloud increases to a certain point, the collision of water droplets within the cloud quickly accelerates. This process (which causes rain) can happen quickly or gradually, depending on the rates of turbulence.
