There are a handful of mining disasters known as the worst in the world (or the worst in the U.S., worst in Japan, etc.) but in terms of the number of dead the worst would have to be at Benxihu Colliery. An iron and coal mine started in 1905 by Chinese and Japanese the mine experienced an explosion in 1942 which killed 1,549, roughly a third of its workers. The workers who did survive the explosion died from cut off ventilation which was done to put out the fire.
