The Western Diamondback Rattlesnake is the deadliest animal in California. It is responsible for more deaths in America than any other snake.
The symptoms following a rattlesnake bite include an intense burning pain followed by swelling, edema, discoloration of the tissue, hemorrhage, necrosis, low blood pressure, and an increased heart rate, nausea and vomiting.
Mountain lions are also an animal of concern in California. Their habitat stretches all the way from the Yukon to the Southern Andes, but California has had more encounters than anywhere else. In Canada and the USA there have been 80 lion attacks and 12 fatal cases in the last 20 years and half of those deaths have been in California.
It is important to be very careful biking, hiking, or camping alone. It is advised that if you do happen upon a mountain lion to stand tall, make a lot of noise and maintain eye contact.
Mountain lions are considered to be very dangerous animals and they are reported to be found in most of California. If you happen to encounter a mountain lion, do not run! Instead, make yourself look as large as possible and pick up a rock or stick to show the animal that you can defend yourself.
