The shortest day of the year by sunlight in North America is the winter solstice. It occurs between December 21st and 22nd every year, marking the beginning of winter. It is the date of many festivals and celebrations both above and above the equator, as does its opposite, the summer solstice, which occurs between June 21st and 22nd.
