A species are defined as having similar characteristics and generally the ability to interbreed and produce viable offspring. Horses and Mules breed to produce offspring, the donkey, but the donkey is not viable. A population is any number of members of a species living in a given area. For example the number of people living in the ciry of miami, or the number of ospreys in Oregon state.
