Germany is widely considered the world leader in green roof technology. The country installs 150 million square feet (14 million square meters) of green roofs annually. Modern green roof innovation began in Germany in the 1970s after existing sewer systems were unable to prevent flooding caused by heavy rains. Now, ten percent of all German roofs are “greened”.
Austria and Switzerland are also leaders in using green roofs; many local authorities require them. In North America, thousands of green roofs have been established in cities such as Portland, Toronto, New York, and Chicago.
