    According to the New York Times, Afghanistan has very rich mineral deposits in fields that include lithium.  These deposits could be worth over $1 trillion if the United States where in possession of the lands. 

    This finding could ultimately turn Afghanistan into “one of the most important mining centers in the world”.  At least that is what some United States officials are saying as of June 13, 2010.
