We have no way of knowing for sure because obviously we can’t take into account gold lodes that may exist but are undiscovered. Making an educated guess, however, I’d say South Africa. That country had the largest gold production in 2006, according to the last worldwide survey by the British Geological Survey, producing 272,128 kg of gold. China was second at 247,200. Other significant gold-producing countries include Australia, the United States, Peru, Russia and Canada.
Production is not a measure of reserves; China at #1 in production for 2008-2009 is #8 in estimated reserves. South Africa’s reserves do indeed put it at #1, barely ahead of #2 Australia and #3 Russia.
