Botswana is the highest producer of diamond, having produced 25,000 units (one unit = 1000 carats) of gem-quality diamond in 2008. Russia is close behind, having produced 23,000 units of gem-quality diamond in 2008. Canada is in third place with 18,000 units of gem-quality diamond.
The numbers are very similar for industrial diamonds. It should be noted that while Russia and Canada are in second and third place, about 50% of our diamonds do come from various countries in Africa.
The principal suppliers of natural industrial diamonds are indeed African nations: Botswana, South Africa, and Namibia. But the US imports most of the synthetic industrial diamonds it uses from China, the world leader in synthetic diamond production.
