More than 100 countries grow tobacco, of which about 80 are developing countries. Four countries account for two-thirds of the total production: in 1997, China was responsible for 42 percent of all tobacco grown, with the United States, India, and Brazil producing about 24 percent between them.
China produces the most tobacco and is responsible for about 40% of the total world production (around 3,390 metric tons annually).
