There are 161 countries that are affected by human trafficking. It is estimated that 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders worldwide each year. The number of modern day slaves is estimated at anywhere from 4 to 27 million.
I’m not sure where it crosses the threshold of “Really bad”, but the US has a problem in this field as well as other countries. It is estimated that 14,500 to 17,500 foreign nationals are trafficked into the US each year from as high as 77 different countries. There is an even larger problem of trafficking within the US. In 2000, it was estimated that 244,000 children were at risk of sexual exploitation.
Currently Cambodia has the worst human trafficking in the world. Due to climate change, Cambodia’s rural villages will face vulnerability to become poor. Villagers are forced to sell their daughters to trafficklers thinking that their daughters will have a better life abroad as a waitress, hair stylist or complete clerical work. About 95% of the time traffickers take their daughters and sell them to prostitution. The sex slave is extremely high in Cambodia. Infact, it is known to be the capital of sex trade in the world.
There is a website called Future Without Violence, I recommend you check it out. They have a list, made by the US government, about the worst countries with human trafficking. These 14 nations were all put on Tier 3 – meaning that these countries had high amounts of human trafficking and were not making significant actions to combat human trafficking. Some of them are:
