Although continental drift or plate tectonics is the most excepted explanation for the earth’s geological features, there are some who still favor the Expanding Earth Theory, which had its hay day in the 1950’s and 60’s. The idea is that the movement of the earths continents results from the increasing size or volume of the Earth. This theory does not take subduction zones into account. The idea is that while new crust is being formed, old crust remains expanding the earths diameter (if this is the case I would like to know why we haven’t found the really old rocks).
The other counter idea would be creationism or the Young Earth Theory, which bases the development and age of the Earth on the life of Christ and the Christian Bible- 6000 years old.
