What could be some problems with making diesel plug in hybrids?

One problem with diesel engines is that they are usually more expensive to produce. For the price of changing from a gasoline to a diesel engine, you could instead spend the cost on improvements to the batteries to increase the all-electric range of the vehicle. Since diesels are good for highway fuel economy, a diesel PHEV would be the most beneficial for a driver with a long commute rather than a city dweller.
