Yeast is a bacteria and thrives in environments that are high in moisture and are warm enough to sustain bacteria growth.
Yeast thrives in warm environments. This is why when baking bread you are supposed to let the dough rise somewhere warm, like in the sun, on a warm stovetop or near a fireplace.
