Actually the requirements for growing algae for biofuels are quite minimal. The strains of algae being used now can grow in brackish water in pools of any size. Algae needs carbon dioxide to grow which of course we have in great supply these days. Many of the algae in question will grow as fast as it has food, so it has been proposed that algae farms be made next to existing coal fired power plants so that the carbon produced in the power plant can be pumped directly into the algae to make it grow faster.
