When CFCs are emitted and they reach the upper levels of the atmosphere, they react with the sun’s ultraviolet rays. This reaction causes the chemicals to break down into a variety of substances including chlorine. The chlorine then reactions with the oxygen in the ozone layer and destroys ozone molecules.
