One of the more serious risks involved in taking oral contraceptive is the occurrence of blood clots. Although a very rare side effect, it is a complication that can arise and women taking birth control pills should be aware of the risks and know the symptoms in order to seek help in case of occurrence. Some of the symptoms include sudden pain in the legs or chest and shortness of breath. Blood clots are a rare occurrence among women taking birth control—only about 15 to 20 women per 100,000—but the risk increases if the woman is a smoker or is overweight.
