The dominant color in the aurora borealis is red. Also in the spectrum of colors that makes up the “northern lights” are blue, violet and green.
Altitude can be gauged by the color of the aurora. Blue is often seen at the lowest alitudes with green int eh middle and red at the highgest. Green is the most common color, and red comes in second. Blue-violet lights appear less commonly. White is the rarest color.
