Blood becomes bright red when the hemoglobin which it contains is oxygenated. When blood is deoxygenated it is a blue hue. Blood traveling from the heart to arteries is rich in oxygen, oxygen is delivered to arteries and the oxygen depleted blood travels back to the lungs to absorb more oxygen.
