At the risk of stating the obvious, the United States is a big country. There are states in different types of climate zones. Lots of climate data exists for separate states.
Based on information from the National Weather Service, I looked at climate information for several cities across the United States. It seems that overwhelmingly, January is the coldest month, taking into account both highs and lows. However, in several cities, January ties with December, and sometimes with February and even March.
The coldest month depends on which state you’re in, but is generally either January or February. These months have the most record cold temperatures, January with 23 and February with 22.
The coldest temperature ever recorded in the US was -80F January 23, 1971 in Prospect Creek Alaska.
