When you’re living near a volcano, there’s really not much difference between 5 miles or 10 miles, or even 20 miles. If the thing erupts, and you’re anywhere within 100 miles, you’re probably going to have some consequences.
That said, there are good reasons for people to live near volcanoes. The soil is fertile and minerals found in volcanic environments can be useful.
