The closest galaxy to the Milky Way is the Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy, which is actually lies within Milky Way. As the Milky Way grew, it began to overake smaller galaxies like Canis Major (the Milky Way has about 200 to 400 billion stars while Canis Major only has about 1 billion). Canis Major is about 42,000 light years away from the Milky Way’s galatic center and is only 25,000 light years away from Earth. The closest distinct spiral galaxy from the Milky Way is the Andromeda Galaxy which is about 2 million light years away.
