Climategate may refer to an event that happened in 2009, when a server at the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia was hacked into just before the Copenhagen Climate Change Summit. While multiple outside organizations reported no evidence of misconduct, some argued that the emails revealed a conspiracy behind climate change. In general it was a bit of a public relations nightmare for the scientific community.
The term itself came from a commenter on a forum, although the “-gate” convention is mainstream enough. Climategate is also used to refer to what some consider to be the “climate change conspiracy” as a whole, beyond simply the e-mail controversy.
