What classifies a moorland ecosystem?

A moorland is an ecosystem found in the hills where thick, dry, low-growing vegetation grows in acidic soils. Often times there is very little in terms of animal life in the moorlands.

This is not to be confused with moors, which are marsh-like wetlands in the lowlands.
