The earliest humans probably had dark or black hair. There is no ethnicity today that doesn’t have some occurrence of black hair. Other hair colors most likely developed as a mutation from the original dark hair color. Black hair has the highest levels of eumelanin, a pigment which in varying amounts can also color hair yellow, brown, or grey.
