Hong Kong produces the most trash in the world. The Asian metropolis of 7 million people generates approximately 6.45 million tons of waste per year. While Hong Kong residents recycle about half of their trash, the rest is transported to three large landfills on the island. Incineration of garbage was banned in Hong Kong 13 years ago, but is now being considered as a viable solution, despite fears that it will lead to an unhealthy rise in air pollution.
