Chicago is often looked to as a model or a standard for comparison for cities that want to increase their numbers of green roofs. In 2005, it was reported that Chicago had 2 million square feet of green roofs already built or awaiting installation. Another 2009 article reports that there are over 600 green roofs in the city. According to both, New York is one city lagging way behind in numbers of green roofs. One of the most notable green roofs in Chicago is above City Hall, the construction of which was ordered by the mayor. I was unable to find readily available statistics for green roofs in U.S. cities, but it seems that Chicago is a top contender.
