The City of Minneapolis has adopted an alternative to dumping garbage into a landfill. Garbage collected in the city goes to the Hennepin Energy Resource Co. (HERC), which is located in downtown Minneapolis. The HERC facility uses mass burn technology to convert 365,000 tons of garbage a year into electricity that is sold to Xcel Energy, Inc. The San Francisco Bay Area also has adopted a wide range of recycling programs. One such program is turning food waste (scraps collected from 2300 restaurants and grocery stores) and converting it into methane to produce electricity.
