A cicada is a type of bug that is most well known for the buzzing and clicking noises it produces using the vibrating membrane on its abdomen. While cicadas tend to all sound the same to humans, to fellow insects certain pitches express alarm, or are aimed to attract a mate. Cicadas are infamous for disappearing for many years and then reappearing as if they had never been gone. This would be considered a 17-year cicada. Other cicadas follow different cycles which may be annual, or periodical. Large swarms of cicadas have been known to damage young trees and crops, but older plants are usually able to withstand damage.
