It seems that there is only one type of chip that comes in a compostable bag. Frito-Lay, who owns SunChips, released the compostable bag recently. They’re made from corn. I doubt they will widely incorporate the measure into their other products, though, as a representative from the company has said that it is definitely more expensive for them to make these bags.
Unfortunately, it’s important to keep in mind that even as these bags are corn-based instead of petroleum-based, often the corn is genetically modified cultivars. The corn is probabyl grown overseas, the package made in a foreign factory, and then shipped here.
So how good is a biodegradable bag? It all comes down to your own values.
