A chief sustainability officer is the person who makes sure the organization they work for is sustainably effective. This is not to say that they make the company ‘greener’ or more ‘socially conscious’, but simply that they are staying economically viable and sustainable enough to remain powerful and relevant in the world as it is today.
Their qualifications make them effective business people who can ride the company/ organization through economic upheaval, environmental disasters or internal issues within the company. They are not necessarily environmental activists or even new MBA graduates. They are simply business people with business and life experience that makes them savvy to what it takes to survive as a business in the long-term.
