Ocean water may contain elevated levels of bacteria, viruses, and even sewage runoff. Beaches near large cities are especially vulnerable to pollution from urban runoff. The most common health risks associated with the virus and bacteria content of ocean water are respiratory infections and gastrointestinal diseases like dysentery. For these reasons it is recommended that you shower immediately after a day at the beach, and avoid swimming in the ocean after rain as this increases the urban runoff and thus elevates health risks.
