Some rubber is natural rubber, and that comes from the Rubber Tree in Asia and Africa (Havea Brasiliensis). Synthetic rubber can contain a number of different things depending on what the makers are looking for. Charles Goodyear invented a process that strengthens rubber by adding sulfur to the mix. Synthetic rubber can also be made from petroleum, coal, natural gas, and acetylene.
