    Plants only need light, carbon dioxide, and water to make sugar.  This reaction also releases oxygen, which is the source of the oxygen we breathe.  

    Written as an equation, the reaction involved in photosynthesis is:

    6CO2 + 6H2O (+ light energy) -> C6H12O6 + 6O2
